2013 Myers-Lawson Award Recipient - Paul Carter

The 2013 Myers-Lawson award was presented to Paul Carter by Mr. Robert Wells, the current Myers-Lawson School of Construction Industry Board Chair, and Director, Dr. Brian Kleiner during the Spring Awards Banquet.  The banquet was held on April 25th at the Inn at Virginia Tech.

The Myers-Lawson Award was established in 2006 in order to recognize the recipient's career achievements and their exceptional contributions to the construction industry.  Previous Myers-Lawson award winners include: 2006 John Lawson and Ross Myers, 2007 William Hazel, 2008 Robert Wells, 2009 William Fairchild, 2010 George Clarke, 2011Preston White, and 2012 Gary Hall.

Paul Carter is a Senior Vice President of Peter Kiewit Infrastructure Co.; an operating group of Kiewit, one of North America's largest and most respected constructions and mining organizations. 

Mr. Carter maintains executive oversight for all Kiewit construction operations in Eastern Canada, spanning from Manitoba to Newfoundland. Kiewit operating groups are very decentralized and autonomous.  Hence, he is responsible for pursuit and acquisition of work in his geographic region, the execution of those projects, and the growth and career development of the organization. This includes leadership of over 650 industry professionals and 3600 crafts people. Revenues of this Kiewit Company range from $750-$800 million per year.

Formerly, Mr. Carter was the Senior Vice President of Kiewit Infrastructure South Co., covering the Southeast United States with revenues ranging from $250-$300 million per year. 

Prior to joining Kiewit in 1996, Mr. Carter completed his education at Virginia Tech; he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Building Construction.

Mr. Carter is a current member of the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) Board, and has participated on the MLSoC Research Affiliates and the Research Advisory Board for many years.  He has also served on the board of the Center for Innovation in Construction Safety and Health.  

Of Mr. Carter, Dr. Kleiner affirms. "...he is passionate about the health and safety of his colleagues and all construction workers."  Dr. Kleiner also adds, "...Paul has always been willing to step up and represent the Industry Board."
