Virginia Tech's student competition team now has a new first and second place trophy to add to the collection of awards! The commercial and concrete teams won big at the competition in Atlanta.
Virginia Tech had two teams representing the Myers-Lawson School of Construction (MLSoC) - the commercial team completed challenges focused on the overall process of commercial construction and the concrete team competed in a more specialized challenge.
The commercial team took home first place with team members Diana Logue (team captain), Justin Ziegmont, Thaison, Smith, Grace DiGate, Cameron Brown and Zack Feldman and team shadows Claire Wright and Grant Sarver.
The concrete team took home second place in their category - missing first place by only three percent! Bethany Fernandez and Travis Edmonds served as team captains along with team members Claudia Morgan, Kenny Williams, Mark Jusczak and Gram Studwell.
Holder Construction sponsored the the commercial competition. The MLSoC team took home a $1,500 check along with the first place boulder. Baker Concrete sponsored the specialized competition with the second place prize of $1,000 and a concrete award.
The ASC is a professional organization that brings together construction professionals and educators to advance industry education. The competitions allow for students to apply what they learned in the classroom into real-world work.
This semester's competition included two parts, the first on October 21-22 where students prepare for the competition by reviewing sample problem sets in the same timeframe as the one they face during the actual competition. The in-person event was in Atlanta on October 27-28. The students missed the Construction Industry Career Fair, but many were able to come back the following day to interview for a job or internship.
We congratulate these students for their success, and we are excited to see them continue to excel in future competitions. The next ASC competiion will be in Reno, NV on February 9-12.
