Dr. Paul Torgersen has taught ISE 4004, "A Theory of Organization", a leadership course, for 47 years. Dr. Torgersen managed to teach this course and be a positive influence on students although his work load and responsibilities changed. Unwaveringly, he taught during his tenure as Dean of Engineering, President of the Corporate Research Park, and as President of the University. Dr. Torgersen did not even allow recent health issues to prohibit him from being in the classroom if at all possible. Dr. Kleiner played the role of "substitute teacher" when necessary.
ISE 4004 is offered twice a year and is typically filled beyond capacity. In the words of a former student from the first offering of the course, Kurt Thompkins, "...and to simply say 'teach' does not do him justice. His classes were not only popular and crowded, but were truly inspirational. Countless students began to emulate Paul after experiencing his classes". Dr. Thompkins was a Dean of Engineering (WVU) and President of Michigan Tech.
Of all the roles Dr. Torgersen has held and in all the capacities he has served the University, teaching is his first love. The fact that he is entrusting Dr. Brian Kleiner with the continuation of his legacy in this class speaks volumes. From Dr. Kleiner's perspective, "I first served as Dr. Torgersen's "course corner man" in the early 90's, as he prepared to serve as Interim President. This led to 7 years supporting the President in the classroom. It was the least I could do for the "teacher who happened to be president". This experience implanted in me, Ut Prosim, as a core value, and allowed the unique opportunity of experiencing the course, and the man from the inside. When Dr. Torgersen required surgeries in more recent years, although juggling increased responsibilities, I did not hesitate to offer my assistance. Dr. Torgersen has done so much for the University, any teaching I have delivered in the past, or will provide in the future, pale in comparison to his legacy".
Dr. Kleiner is also spearheading the "Legacy" project which includes a book and a multimedia archive about Dr. Torgersen, the "Teacher Who Happened to be President." Recent events have included a banquet tribute. On the final day of class, all 100+ students wore specially designed shirts, the dean of engineering attended, and the media covered the event.
