7 students, 2BC 5 CEMs are in Caye Caulker a small island off the coast of Belize city to present their proposed recycling program to the island council and business group. The students are also working with Ocean Academy High school and the co founding Vice-Principal, Joni Miller, to complete some projects to include remodeling class rooms, garbage storage area and helping the students build a kayak out of plastic bottles as part of our campaign to help with recycling awareness.
Dr. Fiori will be documenting the events.
Below is her account of day one:
We landed safely in Belize and toured the Belize Recycling network and
met with key officials about our plan. We then traveled to Caye
Caulker and checked into our hotel. Following dinner on the island,
the team sponsored the viewing of the movie "bag it." The movie is
about plastics and the damages that they are causing the planet,
specifically the oceans. The movie encourages the reuse of items and
the team helped Joni distribute reusable shopping bags to all inattendance. Each time the use the bag at specific stores the will pick
up an Eco merit that students can use to purchase things from the
ocean Academy high school merit store.
Long day, but we are hanging in there! Our ideas have been well
received and we will continue our surveys tomorrow.
