Teaching: Josh specializes in supporting development of students' professional competencies such as leadership, professional communication and ethics. He teaches courses each semester at the undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts training workshops to support professional development more broadly across the university. Current courses include:

  • BC 2104: Building Effective Construction Teams
  • CEM 4964: Fieldwork/Practicum
  • CNST 5074: Construction Professional Competencies
  • CNST 5084: Methods in Construction Research
  • CNST 5114: Leadership in AEC
  • CNST 5424: Construction Research Presentations  

Reserach: In close partnership with construction organizations, Josh's current reserach focuses on improving recruitment and retention in the construction industry through enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion.  His earlier work explored the interactional dynamics of virtual teams, with particular focus on conflict, leadership, and communication.

Service: Josh chairs the MLSoC Diverisy, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, which he founded in 2014. The DEI committee works with industry partners and other academic units to make sure that all students' have a positive experience while at Virginia Tech, but also when they enter the construction industry.

Administration: Josh serves as the Assistant Director for the School of Construction. In this role, Josh represents the School of Construction across academic units with responsibilities including graduate contract administration, human resource management, and new faculty onboarding.
