MLSoC Service Learning Trip Spring 2016 - Day 1

We arrived on Saturday evening very late at the hostel and ate a quick dinner with the group. The hostel is right on the water with views of the ocean from all rooms.

First thing Sunday morning we drove out to the community farm where the Malama Kawai team showed us around their property which includes a chicken farm I perma culture forest and a youth garden. We also ate a freshly prepared lunch by a local Hawaiian woman with all freshly made natural organic ingredients. She explained to us her history as a Hawaiian and how they cherish their culture and also the local struggles of feeding their children and families. In her retirement, she makes an effort to educate the local school children about nutrition.

The group successfully relocated the existing greenhouse and got started on the construction process by cutting PVC, rebar, and painting the wood pieces with anti-fungal paint. At 2:30pm we drove up to Waimea Canyon and stopped to pick up sushi on the way. We ate dinner at the lookout point and enjoyed the breathtaking views of the island.
