ASC Construction Management Competition Day 1

1200 students. 166 teams. 43 universities.

24 Virginia Tech students are among the 1200.

The 27th Annual Associated Schools of Construction Regions 6 & 7 Student competition is the largest construction management student competition in the nation. The teams are presented with industry provided problems to solve.

The teams will have a day (Thursday) to solve the problem and will present their solution on the second day of competition (Friday). Their solution will contain several components including estimate, schedule and construction means and methods. The LEED team will also analyze how to gain LEED points for their project.

Planning. Preparation.

For two of our teams, LEED and BIM, the planning and preparation started before they departed Blacksburg as their prequalification packages were due on January 13th.

For the other remaining teams, Concrete and Pre-Con, Wednesday was filled with putting their finishing touches on their packages for remittance Friday morning at 7am.

The prequalification package typically will consist of a team organization chart, roles and responsibilities of each team member, the team approach to construction management, quality management and safety plans.

In addition to prequalification package the teams also set up and staged their rooms where the judges will observe the team tomorrow as they work to a solution. Their rooms will be staged as an office.

Staged office setting

After they receive their assigned problem Thursday the teams will be sequestered. The rules are very stringent and deviation is not tolerated. For the entire duration of the competition there can be no contact with anyone other than their team mates until the team has presented on Friday.

Virginia Tech 2014 Construction Managment Competition Teams

The current trend for this year's competition teams is a positive one. All students arrived on schedule, everyone was able dine together at the opening banquet (in a banquet of over 1900 people- that is no small feat), our dinner tables were selected first to go through the buffet lines, and one of our very own, Ben Carpenter, won a DeWalt portable stereo. We are excited about what the students will accomplish over the next few days!
