Matthew O’Neill, a senior majoring in Construction Engineering and Management, spent his summer in the place with more hours of daylight than anywhere else in the United States. He interned with Kiewit’s Northwest District in Anchorage, Alaska. The Northwest District is one of the top leaders in heavy construction. He specifically worked on the Petroleum and Cement Terminal Project.
Q: What are some of the interesting things you were able to see/do while on the job?
O’Neill: While I was on this job I was able to see one of the largest tide swings on the planet. We had to work around a tide that would change in elevation from sea level to 30-foot elevation, which made the job unique and difficult at the same time.
Q: What are some of the biggest things you learned during your internship?
O’Neill: One of most important things I learned during my internship was that things don’t always go according to plan. Even though things don’t go according to plan you have to get the job done.
Q: How did being a MLSoC student prepare you for this internship?
O'Neill: Being a MLSoC student prepared me for my internship by allowing me to work in groups and work with other students on projects, like how companies have a number of employees working on the same project together.
