The Concrete "50"

The Concrete "50" was created in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of CAUS (College of Architecture and Urban Studies) as well as a token of appreciation for Preston and Catharine White of Century Concrete, longtime supporters and friends of the school of construction. Through the collaboration of some select students and faculty the design and creation of the concrete "50" was possible.

  • Creation of a SketchUp file of the CAUS "50"
  • The original 2D design was adapted to create a 3D version with the “5” offset from the “0”
  • The first design of the form work was made of wood as are many concrete form works. The design and making of the form work was tedious but possible with the use of the CNC machine to make the intricate cuts.
  • Problems began to arise when they tried to release the form work. Inability to get the concrete to release resulted in the concrete “50” cracking.
  • After careful consideration and planning a new form work was designed from high density foam insulation.
  • The foam insulation was stacked to the desired thickness and then with the use of the CNC machine again they were able to cut out the perfect design.
  • The new design also consisted of reinforcing the concrete with wire.
  • Once the concrete was in place and cured they faced the same task of releasing the form work. Using their knowledge of materials they were able to dissolve the foam form work.
  • This plan worked to perfection and the “50” released flawlessly.
