In the latter part of October, twenty-seven construction students from both the Building Construction program and the Construction Engineering and Management program continued their award winning streak in the ASC Region 2 competition, held in Greensboro, North Carolina. The four teams that participated in the competition included Heavy-Civil team, Commercial team, Concrete team, and Design Build team.
The ASC Region 2 consists of 25 different colleges and universities to include such schools as Clemson, Auburn, University of Florida and Georgia Tech to name a few.
The Design-Build team was awarded best presentation. They were led by team captain, Cindy Macaulay. Team members were Richard Walters, Harrison Pickett, Walker Olsen, Nick Swedburg, and Daniel Barker with Ryan Newmarker and Joe Keffler as shadows.
The Heavy-Civil team placed second and consisted of team captain Brett Dietrich, and team members Matt Keyser, Cody Johnson, Brad Smith, Ali Schrek, and Melissa Peebles. This problem was sponsored by Kiewit and the competition problem was managed by 2010 CEM graduate Jason Lieb who is a Kiewit employee. Jason was a team member of the first Heavy Civil Team that won the competition in 2008.
The Concrete team consisted of team captain, Rex Holmes, and team members Matt Harrington, Timothy Tran, Ben Carpenter, Caleb Carney, and Cameron Hunt. The concrete team received the best presentation award.
The Commercial team also placed second, and consisted of team captain, Tyler Edwards and team members, Brett Engle, Eric Benito, Billy Maddox, Emily Olinsky, and Christian Martinez with Nick Livengood as a shadow.
In order to help students decide if they would like to compete on a team, the program allows for each team to bring shadows to the competition. These students work with the team during the preliminary preparation for the competition, but are not allowed to compete with the team during the actual competition. The shadow students from each university are assigned a team to work with when they arrive at the competition. It is very challenging as the students are expected to complete an analysis of the problem and develop a presentation within 4 hours, working with individuals they just met. Two of our shadow team members were on the winning team.
Overall, the teams excelled in this competition and we are extremely proud of their achievements!
